North Macedonian Wine and Cuisine: A Journey for the Curious Traveler

I have just returned from judging the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, wine competition, in the serene landscapes of North Macedonia, filled with the joy of uncovering the treasures of this Balkan jewel. In this corner of the Balkans, tranquil lakes shimmer beneath raw mountain peaks, and ancient villages stand untouched by time. Together, more than fifty lakes and thirty four mountains shape a country ideal for curious wine travelers seeking a destination that still feels undiscovered.

My journey through this southeastern European paradise was a blend of culture, wine, and cuisine. Historical ruins met living tradition and the rhythm of everyday life flowed gently through vineyards, valleys, and river-carved plains.

Povardarie Wine Region

While I traveled for exploration, my focus remained on the wines that define North Macedonia. At the center of the country’s winemaking culture lies the region of Povardarie, a picturesque area shaped by rolling hills and the Vardar River. Winemaking here dates back over four thousand years, making it one of the oldest wine producing regions in Europe.

Through the Byzantine and Roman periods, the Ottoman era, and into modern winemaking, North Macedonian vintners have refined techniques that capture their distinctive terroir. Today, the country remains a hidden treasure among European wine destinations, ready to be discovered by global wine travelers.

Exploring North Macedonian Wine Travel Through Its Vineyards

Venturing along lesser-known wine trails felt like stepping into a storybook. Each vineyard revealed generations of passion, tradition, and an enduring respect for the land. With every winemaker I met, I found new insight into ancient grape varieties that thrive in the Balkans. Winemakers here honor heritage while embracing innovation. Their progressive approach is woven into every conversation and glass, revealing a vibrant and modern wine culture.

Among the country’s most celebrated grape varieties are vranec, temjanika, smederevka, rkatsiteli, zilavka, and grashevina. The star of the region, however, is the indigenous vranec grape. Pronounced vranitz, this bold red varietal became the heart of my wine journey.

Vranec: The Signature Grape of North Macedonian Wine Travel

Vranec dazzles with a flavor profile that hints at Cabernet’s structure, Syrah’s spice, and the lush cherry notes of Zinfandel. Rich dark berries, spice, and a grounding earthiness create a wine that mirrors the rugged beauty of the region. It pairs beautifully with local favorites such as Macedonian pasta, shopska salad, grilled vegetables, and the delicate Ohrid trout. Macedonian cuisine is strongly influenced by Turkish cuisine, resulting in fresh, flavorful dishes filled with ripe tomatoes, cheeses, herbs, and tender local meats. https://www.wsetglobal.com/knowledge-centre/blog/2021/october/05/discovering-vranec-and-north-macedonia

Vranec finds a natural companionship with local dishes such as hearty Macedonian pasta, shopska salad, or a slice of green fig preserve pie, all beloved favorites. Macedonian cuisine, strongly influenced by Turkish flavors, offers an array of fresh and flavorful vegetables, an assortment of cheeses, and the exquisite tenderness of Ohrid trout. Salads burst with freshness, abundant with juicy red tomatoes, the most widely cultivated vegetable of the region.
