Golden Door Spa Wine Experience: How to Have Your Wine and Wellness Too

Explore the unique Golden Door Spa Wine Experience that indulges all the senses.

By Jamie Knee

There’s that old saying, “Have your cake and eat it too.” This fall, I discovered how to have your wine and wellness too at the legendary Golden Door, a Japanese-inspired luxury spa retreat tucked into the peaceful hills of San Marcos, California. Among its offerings is the immersive Golden Door Spa Wine Experience, which enhances the splendor of this wellness journey.

Just north of San Diego, this world-renowned wellness sanctuary has long been a favorite of discerning travelers, artists and icons of self-care. From the moment I crossed its gilded bridge, the hum of daily life fell away. In its place came the whisper of bamboo, koi gliding through still ponds, and the quiet invitation to transform.

A Sanctuary Defined by Lightness

At the Golden Door, luxury means simplicity. Every detail is so thoughtfully handled you remember what it feels like to simply exist without effort. Guests are provided warm-up sets for daily movement, plush robes for bathing, and a traditional yukata for dinner. Bathroom shelves are lined with spa products from the resort’s own collection. Laundry is handled daily, a quiet touch that captures the ethos of the place: you leave your worries, and even your wardrobe, at the door.

Each day begins with breakfast delivered quietly to your room, selected the night before, a gentle start of warmth and color. Without makeup and without hurry, I felt radiant, light and unburdened. Here, simplicity becomes its own kind of beauty.

600 Acres of Intentional Tranquility

Spread across 600 acres of mountains, citrus groves and bamboo forests, the property feels like a poetic landscape inspired by traditional Japanese ryokans. Established in 1958 by wellness visionary Deborah Szekely, the Golden Door has welcomed luminaries such as Barbra Streisand and Oprah Winfrey, yet it treats every guest, famous or not, with equal care. Its power lies not in exclusivity, but in attention.

Guests can choose yoga, Pilates, guided hikes, sound baths or Tai Chi beneath the trees. Every week is carefully curated but wholly personal. My own schedule unfolded like a meditation in motion: sunrise hikes, Broadway-inspired dance with choreographer Yuichi, wall yoga, archery, tap class, and restorative meditation.

With classes offered nearly every hour, you can fill your day with movement or slip into stillness by the pool, on a mountain trail or in a quiet reading room. The design of the days is intentional, but the choice belongs to you.

Evenings of Music, Chocolate and Quiet Magic

Nights at the Golden Door reveal another kind of beauty. One evening, we listened to a violin serenade inside a 360-degree film and music labyrinth. Another, I joined Chef Greg Frey Jr. in the kitchen to make avocado-chocolate ganache, proof that wellness can be indulgent. These indulgences can be beautifully complemented by the Golden Door Spa Wine Experience. Some nights brought laughter over Bingo; others ended in the indoor spa, where the day dissolved into steam and silence.

A Culinary Philosophy Rooted in the Land

If the Golden Door has a heart, it beats in its kitchen. Under Chef Frey’s direction, this is not diet cuisine; it is high-flavor, ingredient-driven food shaped by the land. More than 80 percent of the ingredients come from onsite biodynamic gardens, orchards and henhouses—fruits, vegetables, citrus, avocados, herbs and honey.

One evening, I began with Summer Squash and Za’atar Dukkah, followed by Crispy Loup de Mer, and finished with a tender Lemon Madeleine Cake. Every dish felt vibrant, alive and rooted in place. As Chef Frey says, “Cooking from the farm teaches you to listen to the land.” You can taste that truth in every bite.

Evenings begin with meditation, a gentle transition from energy to rest. As twilight settles, a deep gong drifts across the property, signaling dinner. Guests gather with a nourishing drink and light appetizer before sitting down to another garden-fresh feast. This is often complemented by the Golden Door Spa Wine Experience, making for a perfect balance of flavour and wellness.

Wellness in a Wine Glass: The Golden Door’s Private Label

To complement its cuisine, the Golden Door offers private-label wines crafted in partnership with leading California vintners. Our closing dinner featured a Russian River Valley chardonnay shimmering with citrus and minerality, alongside a pinot noir with elegant layers of cherry and spice. Refined, balanced, soulful, wines that mirrored the retreat itself.

And for those who believe, as I do, that Champagne can be a form of self-care, the Golden Door hosts an annual Food & Champagne Week (December 28). Featuring maisons such as Louis Roederer, Veuve Clicquot, Krug and Billecart-Salmon, it is a sparkling celebration of food, bubbles and renewal.

A Place for Transformation and Connection

The Golden Door is more than a destination; it is a journey into wellness that embraces wine as part of a joyful life. Over the week, I met women from Chicago, New York, North Carolina, Washington D.C. and across California. Some had returned more than ten times; others were first-timers. By week’s end, we were laughing over dinner, strangers turned into something more like soul-matches.

It is rare to find a place that nourishes every part of you, mind, body and spirit, while surrounding you with people who feel like instant kin. Behind the golden gates, I found a sanctuary where wine, wellness and wonder coexist beautifully. These offerings are indeed a testament to the Golden Door Spa Wine Experience.

Cheers to balance, to beauty, and to having your wine and wellness too.
