There’s something about the desert air, a splash of poolside glamour, and the hum of classic convertibles cruising by that makes me fall in love with Palm Springs all over again – every single time. This year, I was lucky enough to experience the magic during Modernism Week’s 20th anniversary, and let me say… it was a design-lover’s dream come true. If you’re looking for a destination that blends mid-century design, sunshine, vintage style, and effortless cool, Palm Springs is the getaway you need on your list.

Modernism Week: Where Palm Springs Comes Alive

Modernism Week is the beating heart of Palm Springs in February, and it sets the tone for the entire year. The milestone 20th anniversary pulled out all the stops, with more than 350 events across ten full days.

I had the joy of attending a few unforgettable highlights, including twilight tours aboard a classic double-decker bus. Picture this: sipping bubbly as the sun dips behind the San Jacinto Mountains, all while marveling at sleek lines, pastel palettes, and stunning geometric architecture. https://modernismweek.com/

Channeling My Inner Mod Queen

One of my favorite moments was stepping into a living Slim Aarons scene. I slipped into a vibrant Trina Turk dress and danced beneath string lights and swaying palms at a retro cocktail party that felt straight out of 1965. It was Palm Springs chic at its finest, with a twist of playful glamour.

Inside the “House of Tomorrow”

The cherry on top? A visit to the legendary Alexander Estate, affectionately called the House of Tomorrow. Elvis and Priscilla honeymooned here in 1967, and designer Michelle Boudreau has given the home a fresh yet respectful update.

The details were impeccable, honoring mid-century modern roots while elevating style for today. As someone who adores thoughtful design, it was moving to see such care taken to preserve this pop-culture treasure.

Desert Views and Alpine Adventures

Palm Springs is so much more than poolside lounging. I always make time for a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, where a rotating glass tram whisks you from the desert floor to an alpine forest. At the top, the air is cool, the views stretch for miles, and the trails offer a peaceful escape. The mountaintop lodge is also a great little spot for a drink with panoramic views.

Poolside Glamour Never Goes Out of Style

Speaking of lounging… is there anything better than soaking up the sun with a cocktail in hand, surrounded by cabanas and colorful umbrellas? Whether you’re at a boutique hotel or a restored mid-century gem, Palm Springs serves up vintage-glam-meets-resort-luxe like nowhere else.

And let’s talk fashion. Palm Springs is a place to dress boldly: bright prints, wide-brimmed hats, playful sunglasses, say yes to all of it.

Cocktails, Cuisine, and Late-Night Nostalgia

The food scene is as stylish as the architecture. You’ll find:

  • retro diners
  • tiki bars with vacation-in-a-glass cocktails
  • chic farm-to-table dining
  • modern lounges with craft beverages

Favorites include Toucan’s, Bootlegger Tiki, and Truss & Twine, each offering their own take on spirited Palm Springs flair.

PS… I Love You

Whether you’re a design aficionado, sunshine seeker, or simply craving a stylish escape, Palm Springs delivers. It’s the ultimate winter weekend getaway from Santa Barbara, especially when May Grey or June Gloom roll into the California Central Coasts. Here you’ll find art, architecture, adventure, and maybe even a fabulous alter ego hiding behind your sunglasses.

Modernism Week may have brought me there, but the Palm Springs lifestyle is why I’ll keep coming back. Until next year, PS… I love you.
