Discovering the Sweet Elegance of Bordeaux’s Golden Wines

A Journey Into the Heart of Sauternes and Barsac

In the southern reaches of Bordeaux lies a landscape that feels touched by magic. Sauternes, one of the region’s most celebrated AOCs, is revered for its opulent, full bodied sweet wines crafted primarily from Sémillon. These golden nectars, shaped by nature’s rarest phenomenon, offer one of the most enchanting wine travel experiences in France. For anyone seeking to immerse themselves in world class dessert wines, Sauternes is the place where your journey should begin.

The Allure of Barsac and Château Climens

Within Sauternes sits the smaller, prestigious AOC of Barsac, home to the legendary Château Climens. Known for its Premier Cru Classé status, this estate has long stood at the forefront of excellence. Yet its transformation into a biodynamic jewel sets it apart in a region defined by tradition.

Bérénice Lurton has stewarded her family estate since 1992, when her father entrusted a château to each of his children. Under her guidance, the property embraced biodynamic farming in 2010 and became 100 percent biodynamic by the following year. Her commitment to purity and environmental harmony is evident in every corner of the vineyard and cellar.

During my visit as part of a “women in wine” exploration, Ms. Lurton graciously welcomed me into the heart of her estate. Strolling through the vineyard, I witnessed botrytis cinerea in its full glory—the noble rot that concentrates sugar and transforms simple grapes into liquid gold. It was extraordinary to see firsthand the delicate conditions needed to create these wines: misty, cool mornings followed by warm, sunlit afternoons. A perfect balance that happens only in select years.

Inside a Biodynamic Sanctuary

The tour continued through the estate’s serene spaces, including a breathtaking attic framed by warm wood beams and filled with the aromas of nature. Burlap sacks overflowing with dried herbs, flowers, and grasses lined the room. These biodynamic preparations are used throughout the vineyard to enhance soil vitality, strengthen vines, and naturally manage pests. The atmosphere felt both timeless and deeply nurturing, like stepping inside the heartbeat of Climens itself.

A Dinner Paired with Liquid Gold

After the tour, we gathered in the salon for an apéritif featuring Cypres de Climens, a beautifully balanced sweet wine that paired effortlessly with delicate cheese pastries and savory bites. Dinner unfolded in the estate’s elegant dining room, where each course became a celebration of harmony between food and wine.

Her lightly sweet Sauternes from 2012, 2008, and a breathtakingly expressive 2005 revealed just how versatile these wines truly are. Citrus scallop tartine, fresh fish with tomatoes and beans, and even a fruit dessert with soft cream—all elevated by the gentle sweetness, bright acidity, and nuanced complexity that define Climens.

Aged 20 to 24 months in 35 to 45 percent new French oak, these wines possess both richness and finesse. Once considered purely dessert wines, they have proven their ability to accompany an entire meal with grace.

A Rare and Precious Wine for the Future

Because botrytis is entirely dependent on precise weather conditions, these wines cannot be produced every year. Add to that the challenge of hand harvesting only perfectly botrytized grapes, and the pressures of a changing climate, and it becomes evident that these treasures may grow even more rare.

This scarcity, combined with increasing global demand, suggests a bright and valuable future for Sauternes and Barsac. These wines deserve a place on every collector’s table—and in every luxury wine traveler’s itinerary.

Here’s to celebrating the sweet, golden heart of Bordeaux, a region that continues to astonish with its beauty, innovation, and devotion to excellence. Cheers.

Cheers!
