Every September, California Wine Month arrives just as wine country begins to hum with the energy of harvest. The light changes, grapes hang heavy on the vines, cellar teams move with purpose, and the air seems to carry that unmistakable feeling that something important is underway.
For me, California Wine Month is never just a reason to open a bottle. It is a reminder of why California remains one of the most exciting wine travel destinations in the world, and why this state continues to shape the way I write, taste, travel, and tell stories through wine. California Wine Month and the Beauty of Harvest
As a Santa Barbara-based wine travel writer and founder of Petite Wine Traveler, California is my home base and one of my greatest teachers. I have traveled through wine regions around the world, but I return again and again to California because it offers such extraordinary range. Here, wine can mean fog-wrapped Pinot Noir near the coast, Cabernet Sauvignon on a Napa terrace, old-vine Zinfandel in Lodi, sparkling wine among the redwoods of Anderson Valley, Rhône varieties under the Paso Robles sun, Sauvignon Blanc in Los Olivos, or a glass of Chardonnay shaped by the Pacific breeze.
That is the beauty of California wine. It is not one destination, one grape, one style, or one story. It is a state of many landscapes, and every region gives travelers a different way in.
California Wine Month is celebrated each September during harvest season, and winegrapes are grown across much of the state. California is also responsible for the vast majority of wine produced in the United States, which makes this month both a celebration and a reminder of the scale, influence, and diversity of California wine. Santa Barbara Wine Country
In Santa Barbara wine country, where I spend so much of my time, wine travel feels personal. From my home in Santa Barbara, I can drive into the Santa Ynez Valley and feel the landscape shift from coastal city to vineyard country in less than an hour. Los Olivos brings walkable tasting rooms and village charm. Santa Ynez feels grounded and old-school. Solvang carries nostalgia and whimsy. Buellton has its own casual, iconic rhythm. The Sta. Rita Hills bring wind, ocean influence, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, sparkling wines, and the kind of energy that reminds you how powerful cool-climate California wine can be.
This is where I have attended Wine & Fire year after year, gathered with winemakers beneath old trees at La Purísima Mission, tasted at Sanford & Benedict, returned to Fiddlestix Vineyard, and watched the region continue to grow in confidence without losing its intimacy. Santa Barbara wine country is not only beautiful. It is layered. It asks you to pay attention to the ocean air, the transverse valleys, the farms, the ranching history, the restaurants, and the people who have helped make this one of California’s most compelling wine regions. Farther north, the Central Coast opens into another kind of California dream. I think of Monterey, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Santa Lucia Highlands, Big Sur, Edna Valley, SLO Coast, and Paso Robles as part of a long, beautiful conversation between land and sea. Paso Robles
Paso Robles always brings a particular sense of abundance. The hills feel open and sunlit, the hospitality is warm, and the wines often have a boldness that suits the landscape. It is a region for Rhône-style blends, Cabernet Sauvignon, vineyard lunches, mountain views, and experiences that feel both elevated and relaxed. SLO Coast and Edna Valley offer a cooler, more ocean-shaped expression, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Albariño, sparkling wines, and that wonderful feeling that the sea is never very far away. Napa Valley, of course, has its own kind of grandeur. I love Napa for the way it can make wine feel like an occasion. There are terraces, cellars, chef-driven pairings, sparkling wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a level of hospitality that has helped define luxury wine travel for generations. Sonoma
Sonoma offers a different rhythm, one I find deeply appealing. I visited Sonoma on a wine writers tour in partnership with Sonoma County Winegrowers, and what stayed with me was the combination of sustainability, creativity, coastal influence, and grounded hospitality. Sonoma can be grand, but it rarely feels showy. There is fog, forest, family farming, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, sparkling wine, and a strong sense that stewardship is part of the region’s identity. At Fort Ross Vineyard, perched high above the Pacific, the wines felt shaped by ocean air and altitude. At Donum Estate, sculpture, vineyard, and wine came together in a way that made the landscape feel like an outdoor gallery. Sonoma’s sparkling wine houses, coastal vineyards, redwood roads, and farm-driven restaurants all remind me that luxury does not always need to announce itself. Sometimes it is simply the feeling of being somewhere soulful, beautiful, and real.

Mendocino and Anderson Valley
Mendocino and Anderson Valley bring an even quieter kind of magic. This is California wine country for travelers who love redwoods, fog, apple orchards, sparkling wine, Pinot Noir, and the feeling of discovering somewhere slightly tucked away. I think of Anderson Valley as one of California’s most elegant cool-climate escapes, especially for sparkling wine and Pinot Noir. There is a calmness there that feels different from the better-known regions, and for curious wine travelers, that is part of the pleasure.
Lodi
Then there is Lodi, a region I wish more people understood as true California wine country. When most people think of California wine, they often go straight to Napa or Sonoma, but Lodi has historic vineyards, old vines, sustainable farming, multigenerational growers, and a warmth of hospitality that feels immediately sincere. I have written about Lodi as a place of discovery, especially for Zinfandel, but also for its remarkable diversity of grapes and family farming culture.

Livermore Valley and the Tri-Valley
Livermore Valley and the Tri-Valley offer another important piece of the California wine story. I once set off from Santa Barbara for a roadtrip with my husband and our chihuahua for a Tri-Valley wine travel escape, and what I found was a region with deep California roots, charming downtowns, rolling hills, Italian heritage, women-led winemaking, food pairings, and historic vineyards just east of San Francisco. Livermore is one of California’s oldest wine-producing regions, yet it still feels like a place many travelers are only beginning to rediscover. Other California Wine Regions to Consider
The Sierra Foothills add another beautiful layer to California’s wine story, with Gold Rush history, old vines, mountain air, Zinfandel, Barbera, Rhône varieties, and the kind of small-town wine country charm that rewards curious travelers. Farther south, in Southern California Temecula offers a very different expression of California wine country, one shaped by sunshine, resort-style hospitality, vineyard views, and easy access from San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles. That is what California Wine Month does so beautifully. It gives us permission to look again.
It invites the casual wine lover to plan a weekend in a familiar region and the seasoned wine professional to revisit the complexity of a state they may think they already know. It reminds travelers that California wine is not simply about tasting flights. It is about vineyard walks, harvest energy, regional food, farmers markets, hotel terraces, coastal drives, small towns, old vines, family stories, cellar conversations, and the feeling of a place coming alive through the glass.
