Unveiling the Gems of Santa Barbara Wine Country: A Journey Through The Hilt Estate!

As your Santa Barbara Wine Communicator, Petite Wine Traveler, I’ve had the privilege of exploring some of the region’s most captivating wineries. But The Hilt Estate stands out as a true gem, for both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir lovers! Nestled in the idyllic Sta. Rita Hills AVA, in Santa Barbara Wine Country, this winery crafts exquisite wines that rival the best of Burgundy.

The adventure to The Hilt unfolds amidst breathtaking scenery. Winding roads weave through picturesque valleys, culminating at their two prized vineyards: Radian and Bentrock. Each vineyard boasting 100 acres, these unique sites are the secret behind Hilt’s distinctive wines, and their exceptional quality is so sought-after that neighboring wineries flock to purchase grapes from them.

Radian: The Ocean-Kissed Playground for Pinot Noir

Radian Vineyard sits on the western fringes of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation, exposed to the relentless winds and cooling fog rolling in from the Pacific Ocean. Imagine steep slopes rising 700 feet, with diatomaceous earth, shale, and clay loam composing the soil. This harsh yet intriguing terroir fosters finesse in the resulting wines.

For Pinot Noir enthusiasts, Radian takes center stage at Hilt. The cool Pacific winds sculpt grapes with exceptional acidity, resulting in elegant expressions of Pinot Noir. These wines boast vibrant red fruit characteristics with a touch of earthiness and a hint of peppery spice. The salinity from the ocean air lingers on the palate, adding a delightful complexity.

Bentrock: Where World-Class Chardonnay Reigns Supreme

Bentrock Vineyard enjoys a warmer climate compared to Radian. Nestled over 500 feet above sea level, Bentrock’s long, rolling hills are reminiscent of some of Burgundy’s most prized sites. These high elevations allow for a long, cool ripening season, ensuring the grapes develop rich flavors while retaining crisp acidity.

Bentrock’s unique soil composition, featuring clay, sediment, shale, and even outcrops of diatomaceous earth, plays a crucial role in crafting world-class Chardonnay.  Hilt’s Chardonnay boasts a captivating combination of fresh citrus, white peach, and lively acidity. A touch of salinity adds complexity, a signature touch from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Matt Dees: The Visionary Behind the Wines

At the helm of Hilt’s winemaking is Matt Dees, a visionary with a profound understanding of the land and a deep commitment to sustainable practices. Dees meticulously coaxes the best from each grape, allowing the unique characteristics of both Radian and Bentrock to shine through in every bottle.
